The CPR Survey and the international shipping community

Since the first Continuous Plankton Recorder tow was made by the SS Albatross between Hull, NE England and Bremen, Germany in September 1931, more than 300 vessels have volunteered to maintain the Survey. The impact of the Survey does not rely on any single route, but the combined power of our international network. The Foundation is greatly indebted to the Captains and Crew of all the tow ships, their ship owners, management companies, charterers, port staff, stevedores and agents. Their support is gratefully acknowledged, as without it this valuable plankton research could not be economically performed.

Interested in becoming a volunteer ship?

Plankton are highly sensitive indicators of environmental change and provide essential information on the ecological health of our seas. By monitoring changes and behaviour of these organisms, we are able to advise and educate a multitude of sectors including fisheries, shipping corporations, oil and gas exploration companies, marine policy and ocean science.

Such vast impact on the economy, ecology and academia is due to the enduring relationship between SAHFOS and maritime companies. If you are interested in joining our fleet of volunteer ships, see our CPR guide for further information.
