Description

The genus Thalassiosira contains more than 100 species, however on CPR samples we only identify to a genus level.
Cells appear to be round in valve view; with a flat or undulating face. They join into chains through chitinous threads which are extruded from strutted processes. Chloroplasts are numerous. Auxospores frequent; round, inflated cells between remains of parents frustules (Horner 2002). Produces resting spores.
Found in both mesohaline and polyhaline waters.
