Chaetoceros (Phaeoceros)

Description

There are approximately 400 species within the Chaetoceros genus of marine diatoms. Cells which are square or rectangular form long chains. They are joined by overlapping setae which protrude from the corners of each cell.

Within the Chaetoceros genus there are two sub-genus: Phaeoceros and Hyalochaetae. On CPR analysis only these two sub-genus are identified.

Phaeoceros is easiliy identifiable: They are a robust form Chaetoceros; Setae are thick, often with chloroplasts inside, and may have spines. There are chloroplasts throught the whole cell. Resting spores are rare.
