Ehrenberg 1844/ Gran 1897

Description

There are approximately 400 species within the Chaetoceros genus of marine diatoms. Cells which are square or rectangular form long chains. They are joined by overlapping setae which protrude from the corners of each cell.

Within the Chaetoceros genus there are two sub-genus: Phaeoceros and Hyalochaetae. On CPR analysis only these two sub-genus are identified.

Hyalochaetaes are easily distinguished through the thickness of their spines; they have thin spines with no chloroplasts internally.  Resting spores very common in this sub-genus.
