Project abstract

The FP7 program EURO-BASIN (2011-2015) aims to advance our understanding on the impact of climate variability, climate change and anthropogenic forcing on the structure, functioning and dynamics of the ecosystems in the North Atlantic and associated shelf seas. The project will target key marine species to study their role in carbon and nutrient cycling under different scenario of environmental change. The ultimate goal of the program is to further our capacity to manage these ecosystems in a sustainable manner following the ecosystem management approach. EURO-BASIN is part of a multidisciplinary international effort linked with similar activities in the US and Canada.

EURO-BASIN will consist of two phases; the first phase will focus on organising and developing existing data for use in basin-scale marine ecosystem models. The second phase will involve a substantial field effort to collect data required by the modelling and synthesis activities accomplished during the first phase.

The role of SAHFOS within EURO-BASIN is to perform retrospective analyses of CPR data on the long term variations in distribution, abundance, taxonomic compositions of key species of copepods, jellyfish and euphausiids in the designated area. Genomic analysis will be performed for Jellyfish species found in CPR samples collected between 2008-2010. This information will be used to help developing predictive habitat models for key ecologically and bio-geochemically important plankton species.
