| One of the aims of SAHFOS
is to promote and advance education and knowledge
about the marine environment for the public benefit
by disseminating information derived from the study
of plankton populations in the oceans and coastal
seas. SAHFOS consistently develops its educational
web pages. It is planned to provide educational
resources for primary, secondary and tertiary students
and teachers.
Key
Stage 1 & 2- Science (Age 5-11 year olds)
(ages 5-1
‘Bertie Basking Shark and his plankton
pals’ was developed as an interactive display
for National Science Week 2000. The material has
been adapted for our education web site. Bertie
Basking Shark is fun and colourful and aims to
introduce youngsters to the marine environment
and the world of plankton. It includes downloadable
resources and interesting facts.
Key
Stage 3- Science (Age 11-14 year olds)
‘Signals from the Sea’ was developed
as a National Science Week workshop in 2002. The
information and materials have been adapted for
the education web pages and are suitable for those
who are interested in the marine biology and the
oceans. It outlines the importance of plankton
to the marine environment and how they form the
base of the marine food chain. There are questions
to download, facts and a plankton picture library.
Key
Stage 4- Science (Age 14-16 year olds)
This area has been developed
purely for the web site and is called 'Sea
Safari' . The information forms the basis
of a workshop that was carried out by students
in 2002. There are pages about plankton, classification,
ecological definitions, predation and food webs
of the sea. Resources that can be downloaded include
question sheets, classification keys, graphs and
tables. Plenty to do at home or at school!
A
Level (AS/A2) Biology (post 16 year olds)
‘Our Changing Seas’ was developed as
a National Science Week exhibition in 2001. The
information and materials are now on our education
web site. It is most suitable for students who
are studying up to A level Biology, however it
may of interest to students studying A level Environmental
Science and Geography. The aims are to promote
marine science and introduce the importance of
studying plankton communities. You can download
these pages and other resources including questions,
graphs and tables.
Undergraduate
Science
This is an extension of the
A level information. It has links to the staff
page, so you can contact a researcher at SAHFOS,
details of recent research (bibliography) and
useful links to other organisations. There
are pages on plankton ecology and biology, primary
production, thermoclines and plankton life cycles.
The
Parables of Sea and Sky
exhibition is now available on the
internet. This exhibition was originally on display
at Plymouth Dome and shows an over view of SIr
Alister Hardy's life, work and paintings.
