Phytoplankton are the start of the FOOD CHAIN in the oceans  Phytoplankton are the plants of the sea, they convert the sunlight (energy) into food by PHOTOSYNTHESIS (foto-sin-the-sis) and are therefore the PRIMARY PRODUCERS of the sea.  This process releases OXYGEN into the air which is used by humans and animals to breathe.

As you can see from the above pictures, Zooplankton graze on the PHYTOPLANKTON…….JUST LIKE COWS GRAZING IN A FIELD. Larger carnivore zooplankton eat the smaller zooplankton, which are then food themselves for larger predators such as: Arrow worms, Crabs, Basking Shark, Fish and Whales. But remember basking sharks can eat all types of plankton.
