Species List

A complete list of taxonomic entities found in the CPR database, with CPR identification numbers. This list is split into three groups that represent the three stages of CPR sample analysis. Firstly, we analyse a sub-sample under high magnification for the presence of phytoplankton species. We look at 20 microscope 'fields of view' in a pattern across the filter silk, and record the number of fields each phytoplankton species occurred in (i.e. 0-20). This is commonly known as 'Phytoplankton Fields' analysis. We also record a 'greenness value for the samples when they arrive in the lab. this is the Phytoplankton colour value.

We then analyse another sub sample under a lower magnification for small zooplankton. A traverse of the sample is made by microscope, and all individuals counted. This is known as 'Zooplankton Traverse' analysis. In general, we include species that are less than 2mm in length and reasonably abundant in this group.

The last analysis is for zooplankton species larger than 2mm. The whole sample is checked by eye for presence of these species, which are then usually removed from the sample to be identified under the microscope.
