our library of plankton images. The library currently has two
sections, but is an ongoing project and will be updated as new
material is available. All identifications are correct to the best
of our knowledge. Any comments about the images are welcome, please
email to sahfos@sahfos.ac.uk. Any
requests to reproduce material should be made to SAHFOS, all images
are available in higher resolution format.
Karl Embleton Image Library All images Copyright © Karl Embleton 1999,2000 This image library was produced by K. Embleton while he was developing a phytoplankton pattern recognition system. K. Embleton has now moved from SAHFOS to Manchester University to continue work with pattern recognition systems in the field of medical science. Financial support for the pattern recognition system development was given by Department of Environment, Transport and the Regions, UK (now Defra). Assistance was also provided by Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Northern Ireland, Queen's University of Belfast, the staff of SAHFOS and Mr. Derek Harbour.
Norman T Nicoll Image Library All images Copyright © Norman T Nicoll Norman T Nicoll joined the Plankton team of the Marine Laboratory , Aberdeen in 1949 to work as an assistant to Dr. J.H Fraser, a former colleague of Sir Alister Hardy. Primarily employed as a plankton analyst, his tasks were many and varied. He acquired the tasks of taxonomy, photography, cinematography, and providing the illustrations for exhibitions, lectures and publications. He was also responsible for the supply, design and development of the Marine Laboratory plankton collecting gear. Outside of the laboratory Norman had regular sea duties on research ships and was also involved in much field world on the west coast of Scotland. He retired in 1988, but has continued pursue his interest in the photography of live plankton. Below are some of N. Nicoll's plankton images. All enquiries regarding reproduction of
