Martin Edwards

Dr Martin Edwards
Acting Director/Chief Scientist

Role:

Acting Director/Chief Scientist

Background, qualifications and professional membership:

P.h.D Spatial and temporal macroecology

Research Interests:

Martin Edwards is an internationally recognised marine scientist whose primary research interest is on climate/environmental change impacts on marine ecosystems. He and his colleagues were the first to demonstrate marine biodiversity distributional and phenological changes and whole ecosystem regime shifts in response to climate change. He has written over 100 publications including peer-reviewed papers, book chapters and policy related reports and assessments. As well as contributing to high level science he has considerable knowledge in transferring science into policy and was instrumental in bringing an applied ecological indicator approach to monitoring the marine environment which has subsequently been widely adopted.

He was a contributing author for the IPCC 4th Assessment Report on 'Changes in marine ecosystems and fisheries' in which the authors shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize; and more recently acted as a contributing author for the next IPCC 5th Assessment Report on marine biogeography and Harmful Algal Blooms and climate change. He sits on numerous national and international working groups and is currently involved with six European projects.
