SAHFOS Bursaries for Associated Researchers
Guiding Principles
The CPR survey, started in 1931, has generated a large and rich
database on the basin-scale abundance and distribution of plankton.
SAHFOS wishes to encourage wider use of this database by the
research community through an Associated Researcher bursary
scheme.
Topics for bursaries
The aim of this scheme is to encourage research that uses CPR data
and to increase publications from the database. Bursaries are
intended for either research that uses CPR data directly or for
indirect activities that strengthen the future use of CPR data. The
latter could, for example, involve developing suitable
instrumentation for the CPR, improving plankton analysis procedures
or developing new statistical approaches for data analysis.
Funds & Obligations
Funds of up to £500 to cover the calendar year will be awarded to
Associated Researchers. Associated Researchers are expected to work
collaboratively with SAHFOS staff and so actively promote the
Foundation. Publications arising from this scheme must acknowledge
SAHFOS. Associated Researchers must submit a final report on their
work by 31st January of the following year. Half the funds will be
made available as a grant early in the year and the remainder after
the final report has been submitted and funds accounted for.
Benefits
Associated Researchers will be named and their reports published
in the following year's SAHFOS Annual Report. Through their close
involvement with the Foundation, Associated Researchers will learn
of new developments in the CPR data and these may offer
opportunities for further work.
Eligibility
Bursaries are open to any nationality and age, and applications
from all are welcome. SAHFOS Council members, Staff, Fellows and
Students already funded by the Foundation are ineligible.
Applications and Awards
Awards will be made through open competition based on the quality
of the work proposed coupled to its relevance to the SAHFOS
mission. This will be determined using details submitted on the
application form. Although SAHFOS may informally approach
scientists soliciting their interests, independent applications are
also encouraged. The closing date for applications is to be decided
for 2010 (for Bursaries covering 2011). Applications will be
assessed by a committee of SAHFOS staff and decisions ratified by
SAHFOS Council.
